After a terrifying cyclone and tidal wave, Piya, a young Aboriginal girl, is washed ashore on a tiny island off the North Queensland coast. She is found and cared for by Len Scott, a lone writer who has made the island his home. But Len can't prevent Piya from being rounded up with other Aborigines scattered by the storm and taken to a harsh government reserve. Filled with a fierce independence and pride, Piya is determined to be free.
