Epigraph: He is self-armed, for a radiant horn rises from his forehead to the distance of four feet. The nature of this wondrous animal is that he is both fierce and meek, like to a scapegoat. His virtue is no less famous than his strength inasmuch that the wild beasts do not drink from the deep pools until he has stirred them with his horn, and thus he purifies the means of life for those who have no virtue to do it of themselves.
