BiographyHistory

Hugh Clarke has been Chair of Japanese Studies at the University of Sydney. In 1967, he was awarded a first-class honours degree in Japanese from the University of Sydney. He went on to study at Tokyo Metropolitan University, before returning to the University of Sydney to complete a Ph.D. He has taught at the School of Oriental and African Studies in the University of London. With Motoko Hamamura, he wrote the instructional book Colloquial Japanese: The Complete Course for Beginners (Routledge).
