Trained as a librarian, Margaret Barnes has also taught in schools and adult education and has travelled widely in thirty countries.
But her main interest has always been her art. She was represented in the Hobart Art Gallery as a prize winner in the BP Purchase competition in 1973, was a finalist in the Australia wide Portia Geach portraiture prize in 1977 and in consecutive years in the Purity calendar exhibitions.
