Diane Chandler grew up in Hobart and attended St Michael's Collegiate School, a private school for girls. She joined the Commonwealth Public Service after a year at secretarial college. After raising her family, she returned to work in the Lands Department, eventually becoming a sub-editor of Hansard in Tasmania.
