BiographyHistory

After migrating to Australia from Ireland in 1853, Fetherstonhaugh worked for the following twenty years as jackeroo, explorer and squatter in north Queensland's pastoral areas. He was an Anglican minister from 1873-1875. He then resumed his career as a pastoralist, helped organise the meat-export industry, and mined in the Gulf country. Fetherstonhaugh's autobiography After Many Days (1918) describes his life, travels and experiences.

The character Rev. Herbert Heatherstone in Boldrewood's A Colonial Reformer (q.v.) is based on Fetherstonhaugh; and 'his supposed encounter with the bushranger Bluecap is recalled in Barcroft Boake's poem "Featherstonhaugh" ' q.v. (Oxford Companion to Australian Literature)
