Japanangka Errol West was an advocate for Indigenous rights and a valued and strong contributor within higher education. He was known for his strength and conviction, and was referred to as an 'intellectual warrior'. West was also a man who was prepared to confront institutional and societal prejudices in the interests of restorative justice and recognition of Aboriginal sovereignty. He served in senior positions within the National Aboriginal Education committee, and was an active participant in international debates. West lectured at James Cook University, the Australian National University and Southern Cross University, where he worked until his passing away.
