‘In the beginning the Jewish Herald came out once a month, but very soon it was transformed into a two‐weekly publication. It set itself up as the official organ of Australian Jewry and as such printed reports of all the Jewish communities in Australia and also in New Zealand. Correspondence from England and America was also published there as well as general Jewish world‐news.

In 1883 the Jewish Herald began a Sydney edition which was almost no different from the Melbourne one. The first editor of Jewish Herald was the Reverend [sic] of the synagogue in St Kilda, Blaubaum, who was highly educated in Jewish and general matters and stood out with his better literary taste. He placed the Jewish Herald on a relatively high journalistic level.

The Jewish Herald did not only inform readers about important events in the Jewish world and give appropriate responses, but it was also sensitive to the various phenomena and problems in the life of Australian Jewry.’
