Set in Victoria and Haly, an aspiring artist and musician choses ambition over the love of a gentle orphan. He finds success and love in Rome and Capri but death takes away the young wife while the orphan lives a life of service in Melbourne burying him at last in Kew cemetery. Some promise. (PB)

Set in London and Sydney, a poor painter woos a well-connected but poor curate's daughter. They marry but he has fallen out of favour so they move to Petersham, Sydney, to try a fresh start. He is struck blind by a lightning bolt and she finishes an important commission for him. They are very well-received but are her last public paintings as they return to England, he regains his sight and his reputation and she becomes a mother (!) Interesting principally for its glimpse of Sydney and as an example of a woman 'respectably' painting for the public. (PB)

Jerky tale set in London of Jack, an orphaned boy adopted by a kindly woman - an Australian married to an Englishman who had disappeared without a trace. Her story of her Australian youth, her secret marriage and long years of waiting for her husband are completed by the grown-up Jack who has found her husband accidentally in Australia ... (PB)
