1 Bertie's Mission Elizabeth C. Winter , 1885 single work short story
— Appears in: The Australian Journal , July vol. 20 no. 242 1885; (p. 621-623)
US moral tale. A lame infant is cared for by his widowed mother in the home of a generous-hearted Irishwoman in the city, until the mother is killed in a street accident. Bertie feels himself a burden until he hears in church that each of us has a mission - and he awaits his. It is fulfilled when he dies saving an infant from a collapsing house. Sentimental; some effective characterisation. (PB)
1 Her Valentine Elizabeth C. Winter , 1884 single work short story romance
— Appears in: The Australian Journal , February vol. 19 no. 225 1884; (p. 302-304)
A district school teacher, young and pretty, wishes for a Valentine and is heard by a handsome young Frenchman. A boarding house courtship with a slightly older charming French music and art teacher follows - and is finally resolved when he takes off his disguise and reveals that he is in fact the young Frenchman and a nobleman. Pleasant tale comically relieved by a sub-plot involving the Frenchman's valet and a rich middle-aged spinster. (PB)
