They both love her but after self-sacrifice by one and intending courtship by the other they discover she is already engaged. (PB)

— Appears in: The Australian Journal , March vol. 33 no. 394 1898; (p. 226-227) Narrated by an old maiden aunt to her great-niece in Washington. Daughter of a rich old Virginia family she fell in love with a farmer's son in a house where they were storm-bound. Her father refuses to even consider the match and the youth dies in the 1812 War of Independence where he was a clergyman sending his love a letter written as he was dying. She lived another 70 years or so, dying as the story ends to rejoin her lover. (PB)

— Appears in: The Australian Journal , November vol. 32 no. 390 1897; (p. 733-734) Romantic tragedy. Former lovers meet at a seaside resort but find, even with the woman's father dead who had prevented their earlier marriage, that they still must part, for her father had killed her lover's brother accidentally in a gaming quarrel. He had died full of remorse but his daughter was now dying herself - forgiveness and separation alone remained. (PB)

— Appears in: The Australian Journal , December vol. 27 no. 319 1891; (p. 197-198) Dot, abused and neglected by her alcoholic parents, is rescued from the street outside a brewey by a Sunday school teacher and given the warmth and comfort of a Christmas party before she dies amidst her joy. Piety and philanthropic sentiment mixed in this slight tale. Christian woman's nurturing mother role stressed. (PB)

— Appears in: The Australian Journal , January vol. 18 no. 212 1883; (p. 261-262) A beautiful rich tender-hearted girl leaves her fiancee to journey to France and care for her dying father who it was believed had committed suicide for defrauding his employer years before. Twelve years later she returns, dying of consumption, her fiancee having married several years beforehand. Tale of duty and 'the sins of the father' ... (PB)

Spurned on by her he goes to Germany and is healed in the invalid baths there. Two years later he returns to find Margaret knows her heart at last. Slight romance set in the USA. (PB)

— Appears in: The Australian Journal , November vol. 17 no. 198 1881; (p. 146-147) A confession from his grandfather's deathbed wrings from Philip Grant a promise to marry the old man's ward - but she overhears his true response and runs away into the snow. Imbalanced, though the sketch of a deceitful vain woman 'in love' is at least unusual. (PB)

The daughter resolves to nurse her brother and renounces her fiancee who returns to Germany - only to have her brother marry after several years ... Interesting for German subjects, but story and execution very commonplace. (PB)
