After stopping in Sydney he sails to New Zealand, making friends with Betsy Morell. The two friends have many adventures in New Zealand among the Maori people.
Two early chapters and the end of the book are set in Sydney and three pages on Norfolk Island. The action is set during a period when New Zealand was part of New South Wales.
