1 2 Stories Then and Now Jenevieve Chang , Willa Zheng , Michael C. S. Park , Paul van Reyk , Ien Ang , Sheila Ngoc Pham , 2013 single work drama 'Stories Then & Now brings together six Asian Australians to tell personal stories from their past to unravel the threads that lead to their present day lives. Directed by the photographer and storyteller William Yang and writer Annette Shun Wah with music by composer Nicholas Ng, experience how war robs a father of his children, obliterates a young woman’s village and thwarts a young man’s aspirations. A heartbroken dancer buries her pain in burlesque; a young professional ‘outsources’ her quest for a husband; and a traveller finally embraces her cultural homeland. These stories of determination speak bravely of the challenges of finding your way in contemporary Australia.'

— Appears in: Asian Studies Review , June vol. 27 no. 2 2003; (p. 141-154)
Ang argues 'for the importance of hybridity in a world in which we no longer have the secure capacity to draw the line between us and them, the different and the same, here and there, and indeed, between "Asian" and "Western"'. She believes that under the conditions of contemporary globalisation the concept of hybridity is more useful than 'other key concepts in the contemporary politics of difference - such as diaspora and multiculturalism - [because] it foregrounds complicated entanglement rather than identity, togetherness-in-difference rather than separateness and virtual apartheid'.
1 Intertwining Histories : Heritage and Diversity Ien Ang , 2001-2002 single work essay
— Appears in: Australian Humanities Review , December - February no. 24 2001-2002;

In this address/essay Ang poses the following questions: 'How can we recognise diversity as integral and intrinsic to the nation's history, and not just as a decorative afterthought? How can we develop a more diverse, shared, as well as open and living sense of heritage, something that all groups and communities contribute to, including those whose stories and voices are generally marginalised from the canonical national history?' In addressing these questions she draws on her own cultural heritage and her experiences of living in Indonesia and the Netherlands prior to immigrating to Australia.
