Luis Aguila Schoettge studied to become a primary school teacher at Escuela Normal Superior Jose A. Nunez, then took Spanish, administration and political sciences at the University of Chile, Osorno. He studied journalism and drama, and won a scholarship to the Rio Piedras University, Puerto Rico in 1956. In Chile he was a member of the Chile Writers Society. In Australia he undertook a retraining course for migrant teachers at the State College of Victoria and worked as a library attendant. He worked in Chile as a director of children's theatre and as a primary school teacher from 1953 to 1961, and in Australia as a Spanish teacher for ten years.

Aguila Schoettge's children's books are popular with Spanish-speaking youth and are used in Spanish classes in Australia. He has performed over three hundred times with children's groups in theatre and on radio and television in Chile and southern Argentina. He has read and discussed his work at public schools in Lima, Peru, and at Spanish schools in Melbourne. His plays were performed on TV, radio and theatres in Chile between 1954-1972, and later in Osorno and the south of Chile. He has also read and discussed his work on community radio and Radio 3ZZZ in Australia.
