1 Transformed in Australia : The Govinnage Remake Gabriella Espak , Judit Polgari , 2013 single work criticism
— Appears in: Bridging Imaginations : South Asian Diaspora in Australia 2013; (p. 282-311)
The authors draw on Govinnage's short stories and poetry to demonstrate the ways in which the work of the Sri Lankan born writer 'reflects on issues of cultural identity, otherness, citizenship, and coexistence in the framework of Australian multiculturalism in the 1980s-1990s' (p. 282).
1 Fallacies of Interpretation : Teaching Benang Gabriella Espak , 2009 single work criticism
— Appears in: Journal of the European Association for Studies on Australia , vol. 1 no. 2009; (p. 116-125)
'Reading Kim Scott's Benang concludes my one-semester course on Indigenous literature, whereby I attempt to eliminate five fallacies of interpretation that students encounter while talking and writing about Indigenous knowledges. These are: anachronism, emotional appeal, (lack of) authenticity, politicisation, and othering. I will suggest a complex method of reading, discussion, and course development to avoid these traps. Benang can be used in class, in accordance with my approach to Indigenous literature, because, uniquely, the author showcases these traps as faults of the invading culture, and uses them as literary techniques, rather than fallacies of interpretation.'
