In March 1898 the Western Australian Premier, Sir John Forrest, was mobbed by unruly diggers at Kalgoorlie, who were protesting against Western Australian laws preventing alluvial gold miners from sinking shafts on land leased by mining companies. This poem supports Forrest's stand against the alluvial miners.
