Wendy Lowenstein's father inscribed her 16th birthday present, a collection of Henry Lawson's poetry, with the words, 'We must be free who speak tongue that Lawson wrote'. Wendy, who died from Alzheimer's disease, fulfilled her father's exhortation. Hers was an active life of the mind and of politics, always entwined with the pleasures and possibilities of the written word.

American folklorist Dorothy Howard, came to Australia as an American Fulbright scholar in 1954 to study Australian children's folklore. She was the first person to document the play of Australian children including their games, chants, rhymes, sayings, and riddles.
