Jack S. Miller became a farmer in the Mangana district of the Fingal Valley, Tasmania, in the 1950s. His family has had connections with the area since the early decades of the 19th century. The events and characters in the historical novels of The Sounding Furrows saga are based on the experiences of the ancestors of the author in the Fingal Valley during the century from 1834 to 1945.
