Set amid England's cotton-spinning mills. The youngest son of a prosperous mill owner, far brighter than his yeoman family, finds his place and work as a lawyer - away from the mills. He earns not only his lawyer's wig but the quire's daughter by his valiant study and pleading. The squire's inherited title and honour meets the mill owner's loyalty and money. (PB)

Sentimental romantic tragedy. A dean marries his beautiful loving daughter against her wishes to an earl - separating her and the cousin she loves. The earl treats her cruelly, separating her from her daughter and making her travel around the Continent until she becomes very ill in Rome. She returns to her father's house after two years to die cared for by him and her cousin. She is happy; their grief continues - the father coping with his by playing the organ. She dies just before Christmas. (PB)

Ironic English romance. A refusal to allow Edgar Fawcett, a newly commissioned Indian officer, to marry Elizabeth Fleming causes the lovers a year's unhappiness and separation. When Fawcett returns to England with a young wife eleven years later he discovers Elizabeth a comfortable matron and her father's wisdom justified. (PB)
