BiographyHistory

Jean Irven Mackenzie would appear to have been the third child of John Everall and his second wife, Ann. She published poems in newspapers and other publications, both in Australia and overseas, and edited the Women's Page of the Adelaide Daily Herald.

The publisher's note in her posthumously published Selected Poems refers to Irven's 'life and work, dedicated especially to women and children; her loving service, ceaseless and self-sacrificing under the most trying conditions of ill health and financial stringency'.

Mackenzie also published a booklet on breathing: Breathing: the long of it; the short of it (Adelaide: Century, [before 1911]).

Notes

  • Mackenzie's name is often represented as as 'McKenzie'; however her signature has established the correct form to be Mackenzie. L. H. Rye in his South Australian Verse and Miller incorrectly refer to her as 'G. Irven McKenzie'.
