— Appears in: Eureka Street , 06 May vol. 34 no. 9 2024;
'Before his death five years ago in April, Les Murray was widely considered Australia’s leading poet and among the world’s most significant. He published 38 collections of poetry along with books of essays on art, poetry and culture. The garlands laid upon him by critics and fellow poets included ‘the custodian of Australia’s soul’, ‘the one by whom the language lives', and a panoptic visionary who enhanced Australia’s international literary standing and sought to shape the nation’s destiny.' 'Award-winning poet Paul Mitchell’s fourth collection is a tour-de-force. As always, he both questions and engages with matters of spirituality and religion in High Spirits, while scaling the heights and plumbing the depths of human experience. Through themes of mortality, addiction, pop culture, mystical experience, and parenting, Mitchell’s vernacular style shifts comfortably between the urbane and the deeply philosophical.' (Publication summary)

1 Prodigal Forgiveness in Tim Winton’s The Turning Paul Mitchell , 2023 single work criticism
— Appears in: Westerly , vol. 68 no. 2 2023; (p. 161-174)
'In 2004, celebrated Australian author Tim Winton released The Turning, a popular, award-winning, and critically acclaimed short story cycle1. Winton is renowned for his attention to issues of masculinity in his fiction (O’Reilly 2014) (Grogan 2014) — and non-fiction (Winton, The Masculine Mystique 1994) — and for being a Christian who writes about religious themes (Dixon 2005) (Grogan 2014, 203). Whether intentionally or not, I believe Winton brings religious themes and masculinity issues together in The Turning through a reframing of the Bible’s Prodigal Son parable from chapter fifteen of Luke’s Gospel.' 1 Making My Island Home Paul Mitchell , 2022 single work column
— Appears in: Eureka Street , 09 October vol. 32 no. 20 2022;
'‘My Island Home’ was first recorded 35 years ago, a song that emerged from a journey between non-indigenous and Indigenous voices. It’s helped Australians better understand our home and place in it, and points to the value of enshrining Indigenous voices in our constitution so they can continue to speak to us all.' (Introduction)
