The scene is laid partly in Papua, and partly in Sydney. There is plenty of local colour of Papuan life, and the writer is well versed in native lore. People of several nationalities figure in the story which has an original plot leading to an unexpected conclusion. "The Tablet of Heaven" itself is supposed to be a lucky stone, a gift from a Chinese, which is believed to bring "his heart's desire" to its owner. It certainly leads to a series of remarkable events in the lives of a number of people.
