'What is art? What is culture? And what value do we place upon it today? Katharine Brisbane looks back on our changing culture and the way public subsidy since 1968 has built massive opportunities for our artists, performers and those who have built an industry around them. She also traces the divisions that have grown between the community and the arts sector, and the moral divide between art and commerce. She concludes that the promised pursuit of excellence has been fulfilled and exhausted; and proposes a way to salvage its achievements by throwing open our major institutions to public investment and private enterprise, releasing creativity into new directions and reconsidering how we might together build an inclusive cultural environment.' Currency Press one of the oldest surviving independent Australian publishers, is a unique institution: a publishing house that subsists principally on the work of Australia's playwrights, performers and composers in a market almost entirely local. That the company exists at all is a tribute to Australian nationalism. That it is almost alone in surviving even thirty years is evidence of the obstacles that beset the industry and the stubbornness required to overcome them. Currency's survival can be put down to three things: good timing, finding a niche, and building a team that believes in cultural worth.' (Introduction 66-67)

1 8 y separately published work icon Not Wrong Just Different : Observations on the Rise of Contemporary Australian Theatre Katharine Brisbane , Strawberry Hills : Currency Press , 2005 Z1217047 2005 single work criticism This book provides an 'insight into the growth of theatre in Australia from 1967 when Katharine Brisbane joined the fledgling Australian as its national theatre critic. It tells the story largely through her writings for the paper and for later publications through to the mid 1980s. The book concludes with her contributions to the public debate in the years since, which articulate the power of the arts in our everyday lives ... The book steers us through battles over censorship and subsidy, the demolition of nineteenth century theatres and the construction of great cultural centres' (Back cover blurb).
