1 All That Is Solid Melts into Air : Australia's Future? Veronica Brady , 2010 single work criticism
— Appears in: Le Simplegadi , November no. 8 2010; (p. 16-23)
The task of imagining those of us who are not of Aboriginal descent into existence in this strange new land (Australia) for two hundred years, which is a very short time in world history, is both challenging and necessary. This paper explores two attempts in doing so as presented in Joseph Furphy's 'Such Is Life', published in 1903, and David Malouf's more recent 'An Imaginary Life', published in 1978.
1 Called by the Land to Enter the Land Veronica Brady , 2010 single work essay
— Appears in: Drops of Light Coalescing : Studies for Maria Teresa Bindella 2010; (p. 153-157)
'Setting out with an anecdote/parable the critic explores of the relation/dialogue with the land of Australia as seen by its time-honoured inhabitants, the Aborigines, and its later conquerors, the Australians of European descent - arguing that the Aborigines' way of living in it and loving it instead of treating it as property, in Cixous' terms, a "feminine" approach as opposed to a "masculine" one, can teach the latter-day Australians a new ecology, and enable them to learn the natural rhythms of the land, and possibly achieve the Utopia of a harmonious intertwining of man and nature undisturbed by the ideology of profit.' 1 The Dragon Slayer : Patrick White and the Contestation of History Veronica Brady , 2010 single work criticism
— Appears in: Remembering Patrick White : Contemporary Critical Essays 2010; (p. 125-138)
'Let me use two quotations to frame my argument. The first is from Nietzsche's Twilight of the Idols, an attack on commonsense, what is generally seen as "the 'true' world, which he dismissed as an "idea which is no longer good for anything, not even obligating - an idea which has become useless and superfluous - consequently, a refined idea: let us abolish it!"' The second is Adomo's claim that transcendence, properly understood and pursued, enables thought to "converge upon something that would differ from the unspeakable world that is."2 A strain that is at once utopian and dystopian runs through Australian culture, as it does through most colonial cultures, and these two quotations speak to the tension between the two apparent in the work of Patrick White and also to the way he negotiates it.'  (Introduction)

1 Borders, Identity and the Question of Australia. Veronica Brady , 2007 single work criticism
— Appears in: Le Simplegadi , November no. 5 2007; (p. 56-61)
'In this article I examine two recent works, The White Earth by Andrew Mc Gahan and The Secret River by Kate Grenville. The first explores the current preoccupation with borders, both external and internal, and the second is looking to move across them. A border can have both negative and positive connotations; as a mark of separation or, if used as a verb, the action of approaching or verging on another culture or environment. In Australia it has usually been defined negatively as an expression and focus of anxiety about invasion from outside but also of subversion from within. These assumptions can be explored through fiction, to the extent that it provides access to the unconscious, to what is otherwise unspoken and often unspeakable.' -- Author's abstract.
1 Bernard Hickey Veronica Brady , 2007 single work biography

1 The Poetry of Judith Wright and Ways of Rejoicing in the World Veronica Brady , 2007 single work criticism
— Appears in: The Littoral Zone : Australian Contexts and Their Writers 2007; (p. 145-152)
Poetry, as W. H. Auden said, 'makes nothing happen'. But it can alter our ways of seeing and thus of being in the world. The poetry of Judith Wright, for example, can 'persuade us to rejoice' in the world - another task of poetry as Auden sees it - thus helping us to fulfil the essential task of people in a relatively new settler society like Australia to learn to dwell in rather than merely build on the land. From the beginning of her career she set herself to this task, challenging the 'masculine' separation of self and world to explore a deeper 'feminine' relationship with it, setting the self within the larger life of the universe and celebrating its beauty and terror.

1 The Poetic of Place: Judith Wright's 'At Cooloola'. An Australian View. Veronica Brady , 2006 single work criticism
— Appears in: Le Simplegadi , October no. 4 2006; (p. 28-35)
'The article denounces the crisis that present-day technological civilization has in its relation with the land, usually considered an object to exploit and conquer; the author advocates the need to develop a "poetics of place" inspired by the respectful relationship that other civilizations have been able to establish with their land. The analysis of Judith Wright's literary work shows the complexity of an Australian view that explores the link between Aboriginal people and the land, and the way in which white settlement interrupted it.'
