The narrator describes a female friend she met after immigrating to Australia. The friend's marriage deteriorated, and she left her husband; other friends are unkind, thinking her ungrateful because of her wheelchair-bound life, seeing her husband as too gracious for her. But the narrator remains friends with her and continues to admire her long into their old age.
