Born at The Rock in the Eastern Riverina of New South wales, John Warren was educated at The Rock Public School and the Albury Grammar School. After studying woolclassing at Albury Technical College he plied his trade in wooolsheds across Western New South Wales. He subsequently entered into partnership with his father to run the family property 'Milton Park' which was well-known for the production of high quality merino wool. The family sold the property in 1972 and Warren began a career as a sports administrator at the Lavington Sports Club. He subsequently worked for the South Melbourne Football Club and the National Football League as a coaching administrator.
While at the Lavington Sports Club, Warren had been a general correspondent for the Melbourne Herald and he continued writing for publication throughout his career in administration. The Biased Boundary Umpire and Other Riverina Reminiscences was his first collection of short fiction, based on his memories of the Riverina in his youth.
