1 Case-study : Building New Lists Barbara Ker Wilson , 2006 single work criticism
— Appears in: Paper Empires : A History of the Book in Australia 1946-2005 2006; (p. 296-298)

‘Before I came to Australia in 1964 I had worked in England with the Oxford University Press (editing Eleanor Falcon's The Little Bookroom, among many other publications), then as managing editor of children's books at The Bodley Head and subsequently at William Collins. Angus & Robertson (A&R) at that time had named Joyce Saxby as its first children's editor. Sadly she died shortly after her appointment, having produced two anthologies of Australian verse for children: her own One Hundred Poems Chosen for Children. During my first visit to Sydney from my home base in Adelaide, I accepted George Ferguson's challenge to build a separate young books list for A&R, the first to be formed in Australia. I worked on this from Adelaide, with regular visits to Sydney, and received wholehearted support from editors John Abernethy, Beatrice Davis and Douglas Stewart.’ (Introduction 296)

1 2 y separately published work icon The Day of the Elephant Barbara Ker Wilson , Frane Lessac (illustrator), Pymble : Angus and Robertson , 2005 Z1229971 2005 single work picture book children's 'A heartwarming story celebrating the extraordinary sixth sense of animals and one brave elephant who saved a group of children during the tsunami disaster in southern Thailand [...] The story is centred on one special elephant, Mae Jabu, who is coming to visit a small village to entertain the children who live there. The village children are particularly excited about Mae Jabu's visit as they love elephants and are hoping that she will dance for them. As Mae Jabu approaches the village she appears restless and bellows loudly. Her Keeper is concerned by her unusual behaviour, and as Mae Jabu is led to a grassy clearing the children become aware that something very odd is occurring down on the shoreline. Mae Jabu gently lifts some of the smallest children on to her back and then heads for the safety of the higher ground, with the keeper and the older children running anxiously beside her. The gigantic wave rolls in but the children have been saved by Mae Jabu, whose "sixth sense" anticipated the disaster.' (Source: Frane Lessac's website.)
