BiographyHistory

In 1986, Gumbaynggir Elders formed the Gumbaynggir Language and Culture Group with the aim to support Aboriginal people in the revival and maintenance of their language and culture, after decades of having their culture and language oppressed, thus strengthening their sense of identity, self-esteem and links to country.
Some of the Gumbaynggir Elders that helped to establish the group were: Harry Buchanan, Ivy Smith, Joyce Knox, Andrew 'Pop' Pacey, Jenny Brown, Maggie Morris and Jean Drew.
The Gumbaynggir Language and Culture Group also published under the name Muurrbay (white fig tree in Gumbaynggirr).
