Edward emigrates to Australia leaving Jessy in England but swearing his undying love and a promise that he is setting off to find a happy home for her. Later, when Jessy arrives in Port Jackson, Edward is not there to meet her. He has forsaken his first love and has found another. Jessy returns home to England heartbroken.
