Educated at Karangabie School in Nundroo, William Joseph Miller moved with his parents to Bookabie until the drought in 1930 forced them to move to the Lutheran Mission where he was inducted into Christianity.
Miller was employed to check the dogproof fencing in the area with his grandfather after completing his education in Koonibba. He tried various jobs and eventually worked for the South Australian Railways after marrying a woman named Grace. They had six children and William Joseph Miller later became a parish worker for the Lutheran Church in the Koonibba area.
He served in the Australian Army during the Second World War, gained a lifetime membership with the Koonibba Football Club and was named Aboriginal of the Year in 1985.
