Wilbur Wilson attended Point Pearce Primary School until year 4 and then went to Maitland Area School. Gaining a scholarship in Agriculture, Wilson found employment with the Department of Fisheries on a research team. Wilson moved to Adelaide when he was 13 and missed his family greatly. Making his way into A Grade football in Salisbury, Wilson was an enthusiastic football player for the Central Districts league football team for a number of years. He met his wife Lesley on a football trip to Darwin. She accompanied him back to Adelaide and they had three daughters and a son.
