Notes

  • From an Australian news clipping, titled 'Out of the Past' (source unknown), inserted in the Victorian State Library copy of Road to Down Under :

'This paragraph is designed chiefly to catch the eye of any members of the Cormack and Stevenson families whose ancestors migrated to Melbourne from Eday, Orkney Islands, about 1850. A clan cousin, Maribelle Cormack, who lives at 143 Carr Street, Providence, Rhode Island, USA, wants to get in touch with them.

'Miss Cormack has written the Public Library of Melbourne on the subject, and with the letter has come a copy of her latest book, Road to Down Under, a novel set in the Australia of the 1840s. I don't know whether Miss Cormack ever visited Australia. Probably not, for she has got her local color (history and natural history) somewhat mixed.

'Nevertheless, and in spite of the curiously stilted nature of the writing, this is a lively and readable tale, unusually free of Americanisms. I hope the author finds her "lost" cousins.'
