Sylvia is the new stepmother of Tanya and Emily. Emily, Tanya's younger sister, is autistic; Tanya tries to keep the peace in the household as Sylvia regards both of them with disdain. Their father, Alistair, is too mellow to stand up for Emily. Sylvia, a pianist, is frustrated by being tied down to a mundane family; she forbids Emily from coming to her soirée.

Emily crashes the soirée regardless and displays her own musical talent, which outstrips Sylvia's by far. The guests think it was planned and cheer her on. A man takes Emily on as his protégé.
