BiographyHistory

Anne Desclos was a French journalist and novelist who wrote under the pseudonyms Pauline Reage and Dominique Aury. She was an avid reader of English and American literature, and translated authors like Algernon Charles Swinburne, Evelyn Waugh, Virginia Woolf, T. S. Eliot and F. Scott Fitzgerald into French. She became a highly respected critic and was made a member of the juries for several prominent literary awards. Her book, Story of O, was published under the name of Pauline Reage. It was banned in Australia in 1965. She is included in AustLit because Story of O appears in the Banned in Australia subset.
