BiographyHistory

Ward was born and spent the first fifteen years of her life in a residence attached to her father's veterinary and farrier establishment in George Street, Sydney. The family's circumstances diminished markedly on the death of her father, Wiiliam Garland, when Ward was fourteen. At fifteen she started work at a milliners and continued in this profession after her marriage to Charles Ward in 1863.
