'In 1967 a young geography teacher, David Makepeace, leads a party of 10 high-school students on an ambitious expedition into the Carnarvon Ranges, deep in the inhospitable Australian Outback. At midnight on August 20 at the base of the treacherous Cave Hill, tragedy strikes and a young life is snuffed out. Fast forward to the near present, in 2000, and six of the survivors re-visit the tragic site at Cave Hill. But they are a vastly changed group: the years have worn hard on them, especially the experiences some have endured during the Vietnam War. The story is taken up by original group member now journalist, James Delbridge, as he recalls the excitement, achievements, and life-changing experiences of that arduous trip through the ranges in the Central Queensland highlands, and then what happens next at the reunion. Is that a ghost, a freak of nature, or something more sinister lurking in the wilderness?'
