This unit is an introduction to writing in different styles for different genres. It begins by looking at selected genres that involve storytelling. What techniques do we use to tell stories? How does story writing resemble, and differ from, other familiar forms, such as essay writing? The art and craft of story writing are explored through some familiar genre structures. We discuss the idea of writing as a process that draws on experience, research and craft. We see how selected authors portray places, events, characters and themes. Students develop their own creative writing project. The unit guides them through the stages of developing an idea, designing and drafting a story, and editing. Students gain knowledge of writing principles that are relevant to diverse forms of literature and media.
