Description

This subject immerses students in the techniques and theory of writing in dramatic form. Examination of writing for stage and performance, film, sound and digital media will be examined. Students are introduced to history and theory of dramatic writing at both a contemporary and classical level and undertake their own personal study in this area. A variety of dramatic structures are examined, including linear and non-linear traditions of plotting or thematic development and concepts such as disturbance and dialectics are examined. Craft skills such as characterisation, dialogue, and basics of stagecraft, mise en scene, sound production and dramaturgy are discussed and practiced in the workshop situation. Students complete a 20 page script and are encouraged to master, but also challenge conventions, and to explore collective modes of workshopping, and dramaturgy/editing, as well as drafting and editing their own writing.
