The Australian Horror Writers Association (AHWA) Flash and Short Story Competition started in 2005 and now runs every year. It is open to unpublished stories only. The judges look for well-written tales that make them think and give them goose bumps. The competition has two categories: Flash Fiction (1000 words or fewer) and Short Story (1001–8000 words), with the winner of each category receiving paid publication in Midnight Echo, the official magazine of the AHWA.
