A two-hour broadcast written specifically for Armistice Day. Framed by the device of a son asking his father for his memories of the war, the narrative (which includes musical interludes) follows Stanley Rogers (a city-bred, handsome youth) and Bert Hobbs (a typical Australian bushman) through four stages: embarkation, Gallipoli, France, and London. The three musical interludes take place on a troop ship, in a London music hall, and at a hospital concert.Stanley and Bert, despite their differences, become great mates over the course of the war, until Bert is killed in a trench in France and Stanley is reunited with the English girl that he married on leave.
