AbstractHistoryArchive Description

The story of Stannard the Terrible who lives alone on an island in a small shack that is filled with treasure that he has looted from the wrecked ships that have come ashore. In telling the tale Dwyer recounts the chant that local sailors sing: 'Stannard the Terrible waits on his isle/With a laugh on his lips and a heart full of guile, / The current from Blerveaux brings treasure ships down / And he laughs when they strike and their brave sailors drown, / For Stannard the Terrible finds in the hold / Rubies and emeralds, diamonds and gold.'

Notes

  • C. N. Wyeth began working on the illustrations for 'At the World's Outposts' as early as mid-November 1914. In the end he completed three paintings to accompany the text. One of these, 'The Sea-Spider' shows Stannard the Terrible perched atop a rocky outcropping on the Isle of Lost Ships. The work was given its title based on Dwyer's vivid portrayal of the main character. He describes Stannard as having sat "on that lonely island like a bloated spider, watching the yellow current that tore past Blerveaux Light and carried doomed vessels down to the Isle of Lost Ships' (ctd. Christie's).
  • The Galactic Central website records that 'At the World's Outpost' was published by Collier's in at least two instalments. The second of these, given the title 'The World’s Outpost,' has been sourced from an unidentified ebay auction. No details identifying the part numbers of either instalment have been recorded. There are also missing issues of Colliers in the Galactic Central database immediately prior to and after these two editions (55.18 and 55.19). It is therefore currently unclear how many parts were published in total.
