Selected plays from contemporary Australian theatre are studied with particular focus on cultural contexts. Special attention is paid to periods of intensive activity in playwriting.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Critically study selected Australian plays such as the works of Lawler, White, Buzo, Williamson, Hibberd, Romeril, Hewett, Sewell, Nowra, Gow, Rayson, Enright. - Theatre history: the Elizabethan Theatre Trust, the "new waves", the Australian Performing Group, the rise of state theatre companies, community theatre and contemporary performance. - Australian cultural alternative viewpoints including, the aged, the Aboriginal and migrant experience, class and gender. - issues of characterisation, sub-textual studies and physical theatre performance.
