The Ovens Register was established in competition with the first Beechworth newspaper, The Ovens and Murray Advertiser. The Porritt family later purchased the Advertiser 'from the estate of Marry Warren', widow of Richard Warren. Thomas Frederick Powden Porritt, son of Andrew Porritt, 'amalgamated the two businesses but decided to keep alive the older title, and incorporated the Register into the Advertiser from April 1918'.
