'Ray Kelly, born in 1921, grew up in Wagga Wagga rabbiting, helping his parents, enjoying school and church activities and devising plans to extend his pocket money. In 1941 he began work at the Aircraft Production Commission’s factory at Fisherman’s Bend, and in 1943, aged 21, he enlisted in the RAAF with the burning ambition to be a pilot. Fate – and the needs of the war effort – had him trained as a Wireless Operator Air Gunner and he served as a rear gunner in 463 squadron, Bomber Command until it was disbanded at the end of hostilities. This is his unadorned story.'
