19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
Edward Towers' The Land of Sunshine and Gold was originally presented in lecture form to audiences in Tynemouth and Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The lectures were then published, without significant alteration, into this volume. Written in first person, and conversational in tone, it is prefaced by Towers' explanation that the work made no pretensions to literary merit. Towers travelled to Australia for health reasons during a tour round the world. Victoria is described as a desirable colony for the working classes.
