Nineteenth-Century Travel Writing
James Smillie’s short pamphlet Descriptive Australia and Federal Guide is a special edition travel guide. It was designed for all classes of traveler, serving as a compact guide of Australia and its colonies for tourists, businessmen, and the general public. It included a summary of Australia, statistics from 1887-8 and information about the railways. It provided accounts of South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania, noting towns and places, the manufactories in each colony, as well as imports, exports and shipping information. The work was published by Smillie, and the preface highlights the reliability of the information supplied, and the need for works on Australia to fill popular demand.
