19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
Arthur G. Guillemard's (1846-1909) Over Land and Sea chronicled his travel in 1873 and 1874, being published directly after his journey ended in 1875. Beginning with his travels around the Cape of Good Hope to Australia, Guillemard described Melbourne life and society, Tasmanian scenery, and flora and fauna after extensive internal travel within the colony. The author then travelled to Sydney and the Blue Mountains, concluding his Australian observations with a general appraisal of the colonies and of emigration. Leaving Australia, Guillemard visited Fiji on the way to North America, and made an extensive tour of the Americas and Canada, before returning to Liverpool.
