  • Nineteenth-Century Travel Writing

    The Cruise of H.M.S. Galatea was written by Reverend John Milner (1822-1897) and artist Oswald W. Brierly (1817-1894). Milner and Brierly accompanied the Duke of Edinburgh on the Galatea, which visited the Mediterranean, Lisbon, Madeira, Tristan da Cunha, the Cape, Adelaide, Melbourne, Hobart and Sydney, and The Cruise of the H.M.S. Galatea is drawn from this voyage. The text describes South Australia, Melbourne, Victoria, Tasmania, Sydney and New South Wales before they returned "Home." As well as description of the colonies, there was reference to the ceremonial duties required of the Duke, and the society within which he moved. More generally, the text details the experiences of travel, the weather and landscape, as well as the public buildings and institutions of the colonies.
