'The last two decades of the 19th century in Australia went through the rising nationalism. Bush, the Australian geographical feature, then became one of the main themes of the Australian literature. Henry Lawson, the greatest Australian writer in the late 19th and early 20th century, focused on Australian bushmen first in his short stories. He wrote about the bush life as the main descriptive object, and to a great extent, the novels reflect the Australian bush people’s living conditions and mental status. This paper analyzes the bush life and bush characters of Lawson’s short stories, and further discusses the bush spirits in the process of pioneering, which ultimately comes to the conclusion that the bush spirits are deeply integrated into the Australian national images.'
