Award named for James Tiptree Jnr (Alice Sheldon), which focuses on works that explore or expand our understanding of gender.
In 2019, the James Tiptree Jr Award announced that it was changing its name to the Otherwise Award, after the science fiction community expressed concern about the end of Sheldon's life (which may have been a suicide pact or may have been a murder-suicide).
The Otherwise Award was paused for 2022 and 2023, while the board considered new options. In August 2024, it announced that it was moving to a new system, where instead of awarding a single book, it would announce a short honor list of titles, with a view to encouraging conversation about a range of books.
